Al Capone was one of the most famous gangsters who expanded his crime organization in the prohibition era, mainly through manufacturing bootleg liquor.
At his former hideaway, Fortress West, hot springs have been bubbling.
Resort in Desert
Two bunch palms is the highest-class resort at Desert Hot Springs, a spa town close to L.A.
The rate is pricey for both lodging and walk-in, but in summer when the area suffers from heavy heat wave, you may get lower price.
It was 1857 that a settler found a hot spring gushing in the desert and palms around it.
In the 1920s, the hotel established at the secluded place had been occupied by Al Capone, a famous gangster based in Chicago.
No cabins have hot springs for private use.
The rumor has it that one of the cabins maintains in original state that Al Capone stayed, and you may see a bullet hole on a mirror.
At a pond in the extensive premises, you can play with friendly ducks.
This water is not from hot springs, but the spring water is streaming right next to the pond.
Going upstream, you will find seemingly hot tubs in the stream.
However, do not try to dive into the water.
The spring water is gushing at 165 degrees F and used without change here.
On the other hand, these are outdoor pools with comfortable temperature.
The water is chlorinated and the smell is bad.
Therefore, it must be better to turn on a faucet of small tubs and pour free-flowing spring water.
Nonetheless, the quality of water has to become less characteristic, because it is inevitable to add cold water.
Al Capone, who enjoyed this hot spring, rose to the virtual mayor of Chicago, assassinating other rivals.
In the 1930s, he was found guilty of tax evasion and served a sentence in jail.
During his prison life, he suffered dementia due to syphilis, and lost all rational thinking.
As a result, the most likely explanation for him might be the one who was at the mercy of a social experiment, prohibition.
