When I ask Mexican friends for their favorite beach resorts, they are likely to answer Puerto Vallarta rather than Cancún.
In the mountains behind Puerto Vallarta, there is a local favorite hot spring.
Needless to say, Cancún is the world’s famous resort destination and one of the overpriced cities in Mexico at the same time.
Acapulco is almost well-known, but drug rings have threatened the public safety these days.
Now Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco, located in the west coast becomes more and more popular.
Different from Cancún, there are no major archeological sites, and no spectacular beaches
However, it is suitable for a relaxing vacation at a cheap price.
Aguas Termales Nuevo Ixtlan
Puerto Vallarta International Airport is located on the south side of the Ameca River.
The river contributes to the state line between the state of Jalisco and Nayarit.
It is one and a half hour’s drive in Nayarit to Aguas Termales Nuevo Ixtlan.
The rough dirt road was challenging, and I had to cross the shallow water several times.
Since my Nissan Micra could accomplish the road, a high-clearance vehicle does not seem always necessary.
Nuevo Ixtlan Hot Springs is an unbeknown camping ground in the mountains.
Bring your food as only a kiosk sells snacks in the premises.
Change clothes in the rustic changing rooms.
There are around 20 pools for small and middle sizes.
The pools are to be allocated to a group, so that you can enjoy only a pool, and no one expands into your pool.
Guests were all local people, who gazed the Asian with great interest.
Adults brought chairs and stoves, chatting with each other for a long time, while children played in the water.
The rate is only a 40-peso per person for the cheap holiday.
The free-flowing water is around 95 degrees F.
No odor and slightly opaque.
Close to Puerto Vallarta where few tourist spots had, the camping ground was really attractive to me.
Even hotel staffs and taxi drivers do not know the place.
However, the hot spring is one of the enchantments that make Puerto Vallarta different from other beach resorts.
